Check The Part First: How to Avoid a Bad Buy at Fixpart

Tips to avoid a bad buy on FixPart while checking product compatibility

You want a part to fit first time so your repair can move forward. What helps most: search within your exact appliance variant instead of going by “looks the same”. That way you’ll land on the right match faster, and you’re less likely to order something that’s just slightly different in how it connects, mounts, or is mirrored.

At Fixpart, you’re guided straight toward the right appliance information. The system helps you search within the correct version, so you’re more likely to end up with a part that fits your specific variant.

Start with the rating plate (not “it looks the same”)

Start with the rating plate. Appliances with the same front can be different inside, and then a part that “looks identical” still might not fit. By searching with the model number, you stay within the correct version and reduce the chance of picking something that matches the photo but is slightly different in real life.

What this gets you:

  • Searching by the exact model number usually makes results more specific, so you get to parts that match your model faster.
  • Take a photo of the rating plate as a backup, so you can double-check later and don’t mix up characters (like 0 and O).
  • The rating plate is often in logical places (by the door, on the back, or underneath), so if you know where to look, you’ll usually find it quickly.

Searching by the exact model number gives you more control: less noise, a better chance of the right variant.

Check the part as if you already have it in your hand

Think you’ve found the right part? Then check the product details as if it’s already on your workbench. Those fitment details are often the difference between “fits perfectly” and “almost, but not quite”.

What to focus on (and compare with your old part):

  • Left or right: for example with hinges, runners/rails, and handles.
  • Position and type of connection: plugs, clips, and spouts can be mirrored or placed slightly differently.
  • Shape and mounting: bends, tabs, screw holes, and click points need to match.
  • Dimensions for hoses, belts, filters, and seals: even a small difference can cause a less tidy fit or extra tension during installation.

Photos help you spot details quickly. And if there’s a part number listed, use it as an extra check. If a number doesn’t show up or is slightly different, that’s often a sign you should look for another variant.

A symptom isn’t always the cause (how to avoid guessing)

A complaint is mainly a signpost. It points you in a direction, but it doesn’t always identify the right part straight away. If you first look for simple, visible clues, you’re more likely to end up with the part that actually matches the root cause.

You can often rule out a lot without measuring or taking anything apart:

  • With leaks: look for cracks, drying out, warping, or loose connections on seals and hoses.
  • With poor suction: check filters and blockages; often the sound changes too, or you clearly notice less airflow.
  • With a tumble dryer that doesn’t heat up: check filters and air paths; restricted airflow can cause issues that look like “the heater is broken”.

If you see something obvious, like a visibly split hose or a seal that no longer sits properly, you immediately have a targeted direction to search. If it still feels uncertain, do one more visual check and compare again with your old part. That stops you going deeper and ordering something expensive when the problem is somewhere else.

Returns, installation, and when it’s better to choose an alternative

For returns, it helps if everything can go back neatly. So keep the packaging and order details; that usually makes the process smoother if you do end up needing a different variant.

During installation, it’s a good sign if everything falls into place logically: holes line up, click points close without a fight, and connections sit without tension. Do you have to use unusual force, do holes not quite line up, or is there strain on a connection? Then that’s usually a sign the part isn’t the right variant (or left/right is wrong). Pause and compare again with the old part.

Extra reassurance is often useful in two situations:

  • Parts around water, heat, or electricity: after installation, smooth operation (no rattling), no leaks, and stable behaviour quickly build confidence. If you see leakage or the appliance runs erratically, stop and check again.
  • If your diagnosis stays uncertain and you’re torn between multiple (possibly expensive) parts: it can feel better to test a bit more first or have someone take a look, so you order with more certainty.

Stuck? Take clear photos of the rating plate and your old part (ideally also the connections and mounting points). That makes it easier to see whether your choice is correct and whether you’re looking at the right variant.
